Meet the Creator and Principal of HBCU College Prep School in Queens, NY

This year marks an exciting milestone for students and families in Queens, New York, with the launch of HBCU College Prep School. In its very first year, the school received more than 1,000 applications and will open its doors with an inaugural class of 100 ninth-grade students. The overwhelming interest reflects a growing demand for educational models that prepare students not only for college, but specifically for the opportunities and legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
At the center of this groundbreaking initiative is Dr. Asya Johnson, the founder and principal of HBCU College Prep School. Dr. Johnson created the school with a clear and powerful mission: to ensure students have meaningful access and exposure to HBCUs and the life-changing opportunities they provide.
A Vision for Early College Access
Dr. Johnson’s vision is rooted in the belief that students should not have to wait until their senior year of high school to begin exploring their college pathways. Instead, HBCU College Prep School integrates college preparation into every step of the high school experience. The school was designed to introduce students early to the academic rigor, culture, and leadership traditions that make HBCUs such transformative institutions.
One of the most innovative aspects of the school is its partnership with Delaware State University. Through this partnership, students will be dually enrolled in both high school and college coursework throughout their four years. By the time they graduate from high school, students will have earned a free associate’s degree from Delaware State University.
A Pipeline to HBCUs
This opportunity significantly changes the trajectory of higher education for many families. Students will not only graduate high school with college experience, but they will also leave with two years of college already completed. After receiving their associate’s degree, students will have guaranteed admission to Delaware State University to continue their education toward a bachelor’s degree.
Beyond the academic benefits, the program was created to build a strong pipeline to HBCUs across the country. Students will gain exposure to the culture, traditions, and networks that define these institutions. Through mentorship, programming, and college exposure opportunities, students will develop a deeper understanding of how HBCUs have shaped generations of leaders across industries including business, technology, education, healthcare, and public service.
Building the Next Generation of Leaders
For Dr. Asya Johnson, HBCU College Prep School represents more than the launch of a new school. It represents a commitment to expanding opportunity and ensuring that students see themselves within spaces of excellence and leadership.
Opening with over 1,000 applicants in its first year signals the impact of this vision and the excitement surrounding what the school represents. As the inaugural class of 100 ninth graders begins their journey, they are not only starting high school. They are becoming part of a movement designed to prepare the next generation of leaders, scholars, and changemakers connected to the powerful legacy of HBCUs.
